7 Top Fall Foliage Destinations to Visit in the US

Stowe, Vermont town center in the fall.

I truly love autumn, as when the crisp air begins to settle in and the landscape starts to pop with vibrant fall foliage color, it reminds me to embark on a journey to re-ignite my spirit for the change of seasons and embrace the fall frame of mind. I believe that travel is about more than just visiting new places, it’s about creating unforgettable memories and experiences. Let me guide you through some of my favorite fall foliage places to visit that promise to spark your curiosity.

Fall Destinations in New England

Stowe, Vermont: A Beautiful Blend of Colors and Experiences

Renowned for its breathtaking fall foliage, Stowe is on the best leaf-peeping destinations in the United States. When the vibrant reds, oranges, and yellow blanket the landscape the town transforms into a picturesque scene that reminds me of something straight out of a storybook. There’s an extensive trail system to explore either on foot or by bike, and scenic drives offering panoramic views. The town itself is very charming with lots of local flavor and seasonal treats.

If you’re traveling with the family, check out the Trapp Family Lodge or if you seek some fall romance, I recommend a stay at the Lodge at Spruce Peak.

North Conway, New Hampshire: A Top Small Town for Adventure

In the Mount Washington Valley lies North Conway which was ranked number 3 of the top 10 Best Small Towns for Adventure. You’ll quickly discover how much this small town has to offer from a variety of great hikes (I recommend Diana’s Baths and Mt. Willard) to stunning self-drives along the renowned Kancamagus Highway with scenic views around every turn to tax-free shopping. For stunning 360-degree views, head to the summit of Mt. Washington – take the cog railway for a truly unique experience. North Conway is a quintessential New England destination that shines during the fall.

Families can find comfort at the White Mountain Hotel & Resort, while for couples I suggest the intimate setting of the Stonehurst Manor.

Portsmouth, New Hampshire: Where Nature and History Converge

Full of unique characteristics, New Hampshire’s oldest town offers a unique blend of autumn experiences for the whole family. Here you can wander through well-preserved architecture with each building telling its own story and immerse yourself in the local art scene to connect with the creative spirit of the community. Enjoy scenic walks along the Piscataqua River to reflect on the town’s maritime history.

A favorite hotel of mine is the Hotel Thaxter, a romantic fall getaway for couples.

Ogunquit, Maine: Rugged Shoreline & Quaint Charm

Ogunquit is a picturesque coastal town that blends rugged shoreline with New England charm. I suggest strolling along Marginal Way, a scenic cliffside path, where you’ll be captivated by stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean framed by the vibrant autumn colors. Be sure to visit galleries in town as the local art community and for those looking to connect with nature, the Rachel Carson National Wildlife Refuge offers an idyllic setting amidst the fall foliage.

The Anchorage by the Sea is a favorite of mine for families while I suggest The Trellis House for couples.

Rocky Mountain Foliage

Boulder, Colorado: The Autumn Gateway to the Rockies

At the foot of the Rockies, Boulder invites you to experience all the fun and color fall has to offer. The city is surrounded by stunning natural beauty, with the iconic Flatirons providing a backdrop of beautiful foliage. Leaf peeping is a must along scenic trails like Mapleton Hill and the Mesa Trail – just a couple of my favorites to view the vibrant yellows and reds. Local chefs showcase seasonal flavors, making outdoor dining a treat for the senses. Here you can easily enjoy creating connections with nature and community.

For an intimate experience, I suggest staying at the Hotel Boulderado or the Bradley Boulder Inn.

Jackson Hole, Wyoming: Fall Adventures & Wildlife Encounters

Overlooking the majestic Teton Mountains, Jackson Hole is an outdoor enthusiast’s dream come true. I love spending time in the Grand Teton National Park’s stunning landscape where you can spot wildlife such as elk and moose. During the fall, the local art scene flourishes with gallery walks and cultural events helping you connect with the community’s creative spirit. Beyond Jackson Hole, you’ll find Yellowstone National Park known for it’s geothermal wonders.

For accommodations, I recommend the charm of The Wort Hotel for couples and The Lodge at Jackson Hole for families – both serve as a great base for your fall explorations.

Bozeman: Montana: Connection of Nature and Culture

I love how Bozeman shines in the fall, offering a blend of outdoor adventure and cultural richness. A crisp morning hike in the Hyalite Canyon is a great way to start your day where breathtaking fall foliage creates an epic backdrop for exploration. The lively spirit of Bozeman comes alive on game days with locals cheering on Montana State University. If football isn’t a top fall activity for you, Bozeman is also home to a cultural scene that comes into full swing during the fall with art galleries, music venues and a showcase of local events. Another great base to explore Yellowstone National Park, you can take a private tour from Bozeman to see the northern portion of the park. Bozeman is an unforgettable mountain fall destination.

For your stay, be sure to check out the Kimpton Armory Hotel which places you right in the heart of Bozeman’s fall attractions.
